This week I am acknowledging yet another year of my life as I am writing this devotional on the week of my 60th birthday. I have had many wonderful birthdays over my life, but among the most important was the one which occurred on January 30, 1969. It was the birthday celebrated only a few months after I received my first pastoral appointment while also a student at Southwestern College. I look back on that experience as a teenager being entrusted with the responsibilities of pastoral ministry and say: only by the grace of God. I am grateful to report that the United Methodist Church in Corbin Kansas is still alive and well!
Like the great prophet Jeremiah, I too was only a boy. I was not at all equipped to lead a parish as a pastor, but I found myself there none the less. But in truth my story is not at all unique. God has long been calling us to do impossible things. And the best part is God does provide the means to accomplish all things – possible and impossible. We can rejoice that not one of us is either too young, nor are we too old to serve the Lord.
Prayer: We thank you dear God for your call upon our life; even before we were born, you had dreams for us. In our young and tender years you invite us to embrace all the possibilities of life. And even in the final years we are still called to your Holy Work. O lord we pray that you will call us and call us again until we answer in fidelity. Amen.
